Our story

A town that has always worked in steel

High in the Auvergne hills, the town of Thiers has been France's cutlery capital since the 15th century, its forges fed by the river Durolle. Generation after generation, cutlers there have made blades the old way — forging, grinding and finishing steel into knives that are made to be carried every day. Lame works with those Thiers makers. Each folding knife is a heritage piece: a carbon steel blade, a wooden handle, and the honest workmanship of a town built around the blade.

How it's made

Each blade is forged from carbon steel and ground to a fine edge in Thiers, then fitted with a wooden handle. It is assembled, adjusted and finished by hand, so every knife opens smoothly and closes with a firm, satisfying click.

How to use it

Open the blade with one hand and carry it in a pocket for the small daily tasks — opening a box, cutting twine, trimming a thread. Wipe carbon steel dry after use and oil it now and then to keep it clean.

Good to know

Can I sharpen it?

Yes — it holds an edge that can be brought back with a honing stone or steel. The carbon steel sharpens easily, which is one of its pleasures.

Are the handles wood or horn?

The classic handles are walnut, oak and boxwood, and there are horn-handled versions too. Each is fitted and finished by hand in Thiers.

Will the blade rust?

Carbon steel can develop a little surface rust if left damp, but it is easily kept clean — wipe it dry after use and rub it with a light oil now and then. That is all it takes.

Is it made for everyday carry?

Yes — it is a folding knife built for the small daily tasks: opening boxes, cutting twine, trimming a thread. A well-made Thiers knife serves quietly for a lifetime.

What is carbon steel like?

Carbon steel takes a fine, sharp edge and holds it well, and it develops a characterful patina with use. It needs a little more care than stainless — keep it dry and oil it occasionally.

What makes a Thiers knife special?

Thiers has been France's cutlery capital since the 15th century. Its knives are forged, ground and finished by hand, using skills passed down through generations of cutlers in the town.
